FAQs about SpacePak and Unico Systems

Tailored entirely to older homes, SpacePak and Unico systems provide central air conditioning for homes without large ductwork already in place. Best of all, homeowners don’t need to sacrifice their homes’ architecture for the sake of cooling. With SpacePak or Unico, you can embrace a new level of cooling comfort while preserving the vintage, cherished features of your older home.

After decades of installing SpacePak and Unico Systems, we know what homeowners want to know. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we regularly receive about SpacePak and Unico Systems:

Q: How noisy are SpacePak and Unico Systems?
A: When installed properly, SpacePak and Unico systems generate the same sound as a new conventional forced air system. These systems accomplish this by adding sound attenuation tubing near all the vents. So even though the air is traveling at a higher velocity than conventional forced air systems, the attenuation tubing acts as a buffer that reduces the sound. The result is a quiet operating system that delivers relaxing, soothing comfort.

Q: What equipment is installed?
A: A new SpacePak or Unico system includes:

  • Blower coil – installed in the attic or basement
  • Condensing unit – installed outside
  • Main supply trunk tubing
  • Individual branched supply duct tubing with sound attenuators
  • Vents throughout the home
  • Refrigerant lines that connect the condensing unit to the blower coil
  • A drain line that runs from the blower to a designated drain
  • Electric lines that runs to the blower coil and condensing unit
  • Return air filter grill that allows air to travel from the home to the blower

Q: How big are the ducts that are installed?
A: The supply tubing that travels through the walls and ceiling has a 2 inch diameter on the inside and 3.5 inch diameter on the outside. The main duct line installed in the attic or basement has a 7-9 inch diameter.

Q: Where are the vents installed?
A: Vents can be installed on the ceiling, flooring, or high up on the wall. Floor vents are installed with a fine mesh screen to prevent anything falling down into them. We determine where the vents should go based on your home’s architecture, layout, and square footage, as well as your family’s sleeping locations, and traffic patterns.

Q: What do the vents look like?
A: The round, inconspicuous vents come in a variety of different looks including basic white, unfinished wood, finished aluminum and brass, and Victorian embellishment. View the SpacePak brochure to see some examples.

Q: How big are the vents?
A: Vents are about the size of a CD-rom, or just under 5 inches in diameter. The center opening is about 2 inches in diameter.

Q: Are SpacePak and Unico Systems as comfortable as conventional air conditioning?
A: Yes, if not more so. SpacePak and Unico systems remove up to 30% more moisture than conventional forced air systems. This distinction is critical to your comfort level in a high-humidity climate like Chicago in the summer. Plus, there is less stratification, or temperature difference from floor to ceiling, with a SpacePak-type system. Rooms stay a comfortable, uniform temperature.

Q: How long does it take to install a SpacePak or Unico system?
A: Generally, it takes 5-7 work days to install your whole SpacePak or Unico system. Of course, the larger your home size, the longer the installation. We take the time to make sure every installation fits the home perfectly to ensure optimal system performance, longevity, and energy efficiency.
